A while back I discussed early childhood cavities, especially ‘baby bottle syndrome”, and several things parents can do to prevent them. Obviously, these issues are a concern after teeth have come into the mouth. However, oral hygiene should begin shortly after the baby is born before teeth are present. Our main concern here is to prevent thrush. Thrush is a treatable fungal (yeast) infection that can appear in tiny tears in gum tissues arising from continual sucking on a pacifier and/or breastfeeding. It will appear as white patches on gums, the tongue or inside of the cheeks that are sticky and can’t be wiped off. Getting into the habit of gently cleaning these areas with a clean, warm wash cloth after feeding can be useful in prevention. If you suspect that your baby has thrush, seek advice from your dentist to see if prescription medication is appropriate.
