Don’t Stop ‘Til You Floss Enough! Shamone!

September 1, 2016

I have received many questions from patients and phone calls from friends regarding a report from the Associated Press (August 2016) stating there is no direct evidence proving the effectiveness of flossing. My answer to everyone is “Don’t floss at your own peril!”. Here’s why. If you don’t remove plaque in the first 24 hours after it’s formation, it can begin the process of tooth decay or gum disease. The bristles of you brush just can’t get to the plaque in between your teeth the way floss can. Many of my patients report much better gum health (e.g. less bleeding) once they started flossing regularly. I also think flossing is a must for those people who are prone to cavities that start in between their teeth. As far as I’m concerned, it’s much better to spend a few extra minutes a day flossing than going to the dentist more than you have to.
