Do you have a sweet tooth? Most people love sugary and sweet foods because of the taste. Sugar also hits your brain and revs up your energy like nothing else. (Hence the term ‘sugar high’.) However, sugar is not a healthy sweet food and has a negative impact on your oral health.

Sugar causes an increase in acidity in your mouth. What does this mean? Well, the level of acid in your oral cavity controls the number of bacteria that can accumulate in your mouth. Therefore, when you eat sugary and sweet foods, you increase your mouth’s acidity level, which causes bacteria to build and linger in your mouth.

The amount, form and type of sugar you consume can differ but all sugary food causes the same results, and that is tooth decay! When you consume sugar, it mixes with your saliva and causes the PH level in your mouth to decrease. Bacteria feeds on sugar, and they make toxic acids that can harm your teeth and gums, which put your mouth susceptible to more harmful bacteria growth. If you don’t brush your teeth after eating sugary foods, you’ll end up with tooth decay and/or gum disease.

The fight against tooth decay and dental problems do not end with good oral hygiene routine. Eating well-balanced meals and avoiding foods that are harmful to your mouth is also essential. To learn more about the effects of sugar on your teeth and gums, contact us at Toronto Beach Dental!

Are you self-conscious about your breath? Maybe you’ve tried various mints and gums to help, but no matter what you chew you are still suffering from it. Instead of turning to these temporary solutions, it’s time to see the dentist!

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, can be a very distressing dental condition. It decreases self-esteem and can impact meaningful relationships especially when you have chronic halitosis. Products in the market are good, but they often offer temporary measures and do not really address the underlying cause of bad breath.

What you need to do about halitosis

The first important thing to learn is the underlying cause of your bad breath. There are several reasons why people suffer from bad breath. Medical conditions such as cancer and throat problems, certain foods and habits, prescribed medications, poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, infections and other oral problems such as cavities are some of the most common causes of halitosis. Treating the underlying cause can have a direct effect on preventing bad breath.

Oral problems such as cavities or mouth infections must be addressed as early as possible to prevent the problem from further developing. To understand the underlying reason, visit your dentist for a dental check-up and cleaning. Furthermore, a proper daily oral hygiene routine is necessary to prevent and control bad breath.
