The field of dentistry continues to evolve with medical research and advancements. One of the most significant ongoing research topics, is about stem cells. Can you imagine if you went to the dentist for a filling and all they needed to do was use a simple light treatment to regrow your teeth from stem cells? It’s incredible the potential work that can be accomplished as a result. Researchers have been developing a technique which uses a low-power laser to transform stem cells into dentin. This has many applications from wound healing to bone restoration. These findings have been published in the study, Science Translational Medicine. Researchers at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, have indicated that using a collagen-based biomaterial, they can deliver stem cells inside of damaged teeth to help them regenerate a dental pulp-like tissue. These strategies all help to restore natural tooth functionality. Although progress is being made, a significant amount of research still needs to be done for stem cells to be used in dental practices. I eagerly await their findings and how they can better improve patient treatment and care.
